Hermits in community

An insight into the community of Carmel Glasgow

In this house – all must be friends, all must be loved, all must be held dear, all must be helped”

Discover what a Carmelite Life is all about

A community of Catholic women dedicated to prayer for the Church and the world in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Avila, their founder and inspiration.

Our Mission

To talk about the mission of Carmelite Sisters may seem strange but Saint Teresa wanted us to be apostolic: involved, through our life of prayer, in the Church and the world. Saint Therese saw her vocation as being “love at the heart of the Church”….could there be a higher calling?

Our Life of Prayer

We pray with the Church and as a community seven times a day and at regular times throughout the day with the Divine Office. We also have two hours of quiet, contemplative prayer; one in the morning, the other in the evening. However following the invitation of Jesus to “pray always” we try to make our whole day an experience of prayer whatever we are doing.

Community Life

We are “hermits in community”. This may seem like a contradiction but it is not. Saint Teresa wanted small communities of like minded people to grow together by living together while, at the same time living in silence and solitude.

Testimonials

What some of the sisters say…

Carmelite life is a journey of discovery, a never ending, exciting and, at times, challenging journey into the depth of oneself and of God. It is a life given, in love, for the Church and the World.

Sister Jenny

There must be something more!  This searching was with me in my teens as it is today.  The Carmelite way of life allowed me to plumb the still dark places, plumbed through contemplative prayer and the asceticism required for it.

Sister Marie Helen

“Carmel?” Oh no, surely not! And yet something/someone compelled me to go – only, I thought to “try it out” – 50 years and more and I’m still here – indeed God’s ways are not our ways! “Be still and know that I am God” – this speaks to me a little of what Carmelite life is about – stillness in the depth, becoming friends with God and praying for His love to penetrate all hearts.
